2015 April 3rd Come and Sing John Stainer The Crucifixion

Review of Wroughton Choral Society concert on April 13rd 2015

On Good Friday I went to Wroughton Choral Society's performance of Stainer's Crucifixion. This was a "come and sing" performance, but it did not have an under-rehearsed and slightly patchy feel that this might imply. The choir's singing throughout was very well-balanced and most of the time produced a rounded, well-blended sound. They responded well to John Henderson's shaping of the music and showed they were capable of an impressive dynamic range.

The tenor and bass soloists set the mood beautifully in the two short opening solos and the choir captured the feeling of agony and mourning in a very moving first chorus. I knew then that the devotional atmosphere demanded by this ever-popular piece of Passion music was established. The tenor soloist sang effectively with a range from power to pleading in a demanding role; a good contrast to the dignified bass soloist.

Mention must be made of the organist, Ian Crabbe, who supported and complemented the choir perfectly. I look forward to an equally satisfying performance at the next concert in May.

2014 December 9th Christmas Concert
2014 July 6th Come and Sing  Requiem and Cantique de Jean Racine by Fauré

Reviews of Wroughton Choral Society concert on June 6th 2014

First of all, my thanks to all Society members for making me feel welcome and secondly, to everyone who worked behind the scenes to make the evening run smoothly.
Lastly, a musician friend of mine, present at the concert said that, as an ensemble, he felt that we performed exceptionally well, were well-balanced and responsive to the dynamics of each piece; all in all, a very pleasant evening's entertainment.
It was a great pleasure to work with such a good choir.

A concert like that is very much a team effort - every member of choir contributes and I thought we did pretty well.

... very enjoyable. Grateful thanks to John too ! His hard work was very worthwhile and appreciated. Also to your Committee for their efforts

2014 April 18th Blest Pair of Sirens, Parry; Mass Opus 4 Saint Saens

Review of Wroughton Choral Society concert on April 18th 2014

Well done, Wroughton Choral Society! I listened with great pleasure, on Good Friday, to a confident performance of Parry's Blest Pair of Sirens and the Mass, Opus 4 by Saint Saëns. The Parry, directed with encouragement and energy by Angela Breakspear, lifted the spirits with a bright, stirring sound. The ebb and flow of the dynamics and speed changes swept us along to the resounding ending.

The Saint Saëns mass, not the best -known of his compositions, was by contrast a more sober piece, although it had very exciting moments particularly in the Gloria. All these things came together as the choir responded to John Henderson's direction, producing a lovely range of dynamic contrasts from declamatory power to hushed reverence. The solo quartet provided a very effective, well-balanced contrast to the full choir passages in the Credo, as did several short solos in other places in the work, smoothly fitting in to the overall texture. Everyone contributed to this very musical performance, but the organist, Darren Hogg, has to be singled out. He imaginatively and sensitively explored the range of timbres offered by the organ, accompanying both unobtrusively and prominently where needed. This was a very enjoyable experience.
